COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bridge Street Town Centre is hosting its first Barktober celebration on October 25 at the Belk Courtyard from 12—2 p.m.—with pet costume contests, prizes, themed photo opportunities and live music for all attendees.  WHNT News 19
  • Domestic Violence Program Director Cherrelle Locke of Crisis Services of North Alabama shared local help resources during Domestic Violence Awareness Month—residents can access support from local organizations.  WAAY 31

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Floriana, a beloved Italian restaurant from DC, will open its third location in MidCity at the NOLA Building in 2026—an 8,000-square-foot space where guests will enjoy its handmade pastas alongside new offerings like a raw bar and wood-fired pizzas.  WAAY 31

CULTURE NEWS

  • City leaders announced that a $10M project will add a new building to the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum next week. The current building will be converted into an aviation annex — built to house helicopters and aircraft.  WAAY 31

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alabama ranked 4th in a study on affordable retirement that looked at everyday costs like transportation, healthcare, and groceries. Retirees need just under $62,000 a year (due to low property taxes and lower gas prices) to live comfortably, and experts advise planning for unexpected costs.  WHNT News 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The SIGNALS Museum on University Drive plans to add STEM classrooms for hands-on learning for smaller groups using grant funds — Executive Director Gina James said the project will support specialty workshops and field trips to continue founder Marc Bendickson's vision for interactive education.  WAFF 48
  • Alabama A&M University is hosting homecoming events and celebrating its 150th anniversary (with planned activities to bring together students and alumni).  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City approved an agreement with Dr. Caroline Swope of Kingstree Studios to prepare National Register nominations for Magnolia Terrace and Brothers Heights/Gurley Additions—funded by a $35,000 CLG grant with the City covering 40% of the cost. The project documented over 250 historic properties to preserve important local history.  City of Huntsville
  • The federal shutdown began on October 1 after Congress failed to pass a funding bill and has led to furloughs that have affected Huntsville’s defense and aerospace jobs. Local leaders are urging workers to save money and small businesses to apply for emergency support — measures aimed at lessening the economic impact if the shutdown continues.  Huntsville Business Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Huntsville City FC will travel to face rival Chattanooga FC in its first playoff match on Sunday, October 19 at Finley Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) and fans from Huntsville are encouraged to show their support.  WAAY 31
