- ➤ One Generation Away provided mobile food pantries to furloughed workers in North Alabama whose income was affected by the government shutdown — the nonprofit offered needed relief amid lost earnings. WAAY 31
- ➤ Kate O’Neal — founder of Caring Link, a nonprofit that sets up care closets at local schools — has been named one of the finalists for the Betty Jane Frank Humanitarian Award. If she wins, her nonprofit will add two more care closets and a resource center to help over 1,000 more students. WAFF 48
- ➤ Huntsville will host a Halloween bash that offers food trucks, a DJ and a haunted house located at the Jaycee Building+ John Hunt Park. WAAY 31
- ➤ Habitat for Humanity built a new home in Huntsville for a single mom on Oct 13 with help from dedicated women volunteers—this project marks a strong commitment to safe and affordable housing. WAAY 31
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Due to safety concerns, organizers canceled Decatur's Día de los Muertos festival on October 13th to avoid potentially putting people in harm's way—calling it the toughest decision they had made. They said the move prioritized community safety. WAAY 31

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Charles L. Karr — who served as dean of the College of Engineering at Alabama before joining UAH — announced his retirement on October 13th; he will leave the post at the end of the spring term in May 2026 after presiding over two more commencement ceremonies.
