COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Huntsville’s Downtown Rescue Mission is giving away turkey dinner boxes for families in need to celebrate Thanksgiving—each box serves 4 to 6 people with a turkey and all fixings. Residents may sign up for a voucher at the mission’s main campus at 1400 Evangel Drive on November 3rd or November 4th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.—boxes are available while supplies last and a photo ID is required.  AL.com
  • OneGenAway is hosting a food distribution event today at Calhoun Community College in Huntsville from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to help furloughed workers during the looming government shutdown — the organization will distribute 3 to 4,000 pounds of food boxes filled with pantry essentials to anyone who shows up.  WHNT News 19

  • A Priceville family lost everything when their camper caught fire earlier this week from an HVAC unit malfunction, with the children escaping but the three dogs perishing and neighbors rallying to donate clothes, food, and funds.  WAFF 48

  • Beloved comedian John Mulaney will perform at the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall in Huntsville on February 22, 2026 during his Mister Whatever tour — tickets went on sale Friday, October 24 at 10 a.m. — and fans can buy them at the box office or online.  WHNT News 19
  • Rocket Westies talked about plans for an upcoming swing dance event in Huntsville—organizers are finalizing details and will announce the venue and schedule soon.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Madison Academy Elementary School became certified as an official outdoor classroom school on Thursday—its new status lets it build an outdoor classroom and wildlife habitat with support from the Alabama Wildlife Federation—and it will serve as a model for other schools.  WHNT News 19
  • The University of Alabama System began a national search for the next University of Alabama in Huntsville president and formed a Presidential Search Advisory Committee to guide the process. Virtual listening sessions for community members, students, staff, alumni, and faculty will occur on Oct 27—31 via Zoom to share feedback on candidate qualifications.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • UAH announced on Oct. 13 that President Charles L. Karr will retire at the end of the spring term in May with his last commencement in spring, and the university is holding virtual Zoom sessions next week for public feedback on the new president search. These sessions invite community input to help shape the leadership transition.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Huntsville City Council approved a $1.5 million contract with Grayson Carter & Son Contracting to finish a 1.5-mile section of the Tennessee River Greenway from Hobbs Road to Green Cove Road—linking Elgies Greenway with Ditto Landing where a new event center is planned. The council also voted to donate 0.265 acres near the Trailhead Greenway to the Land Trust of North Alabama to support its Discovery Center project.  AL.com
