COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of North Alabama will help furloughed workers affected by the government shutdown by holding a free grocery distribution event on Wednesday, October 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium—3125 Don Mincher Dr. SW.  WHNT News 19
  • United Community earned a 2025 ABA Foundation Community Commitment Award for its Financial Literacy Month program—announced at an annual convention in Charlotte. The program, launched in 2022, held 154 workshops that reached over 13,400 people and provided $30,000 to local nonprofits.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Marine Corps Reserve and Semper Fi riders are set to lead a Toys for Tots motorcycle parade this Saturday at Redstone Harley-Davidson in Madison (organizers expect the event to raise donations for children in need).  WAAY 31

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Shipley’s Do-Nuts is opening its first North Alabama location today at 5 a.m. at a new shopping complex on Memorial Parkway in Huntsville—this shop is the second state location and the chain plans to expand to 30 cities by 2027.  AL.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The record-breaking 2025 North Alabama Airfest at Pryor Field Regional Airport attracted over 12,500 visitors from more than 35 states and three countries and generated over $3.2 million in economic activity. The airfest set the stage for the 2026 event, scheduled for September 12-13, 2026—promising a night show with a drone display.  Huntsville Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Madison City Schools will hold a public hearing today at 4:30 p.m. on a new rezoning proposal that follows months of parental feedback and several plan revisions—designed to balance school enrollment amid rapid growth in Limestone County and Triana. The board will vote on the plan at a later meeting.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Food assistance services in North Alabama announced that SNAP benefit allotments for November will pause—effective November 1—until federal funding is provided.  WAFF 48
  • Food banks are preparing for increased use as Alabama suspends SNAP benefits for November on Nov. 1 (the change may affect many residents). Officials say families relying on SNAP will need extra support from local food pantries (volunteers and resources are being organized).  FOX 54

HEALTH NEWS

  • Huntsville Hospital celebrated 30 years of its trauma program yesterday— it remains the only Level I trauma center in the region.  WAAY 31

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bob Jones volleyball team will face the top-ranked McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets on Wednesday at Birmingham's SportsPlex at 9:00 a.m.—a rematch after previous losses against the defending champions. A win will send the Lady Patriots to meet Austin-St. Paul's Episcopal at 3:00 p.m.—Coach Jenny Jarrett said the team must avoid mistakes to succeed.  The Madison Record
  • The Mayor's Cup returned Monday night as UAH and Alabama A&M renewed a 12-year break in their basketball rivalry that goes back nearly 50 years—both teams collected food donations for local pantries. The free games took place at the Alabama A&M campus with the women's contest starting at 5 p.m. and the men's at 7 p.m., while UAH alumni hosted a mixer downtown.  FOX 54
