COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Huntsville Parks & Recreation unveiled its spooky October schedule that offers a variety of Halloween events for the community—local residents can look forward to fun and family-friendly activities throughout the month.  WAFF 48
  • Metro Diner on Airport Road is hosting a food drive throughout November to help neighbors facing a loss of SNAP benefits on November 1—donations for both perishable and nonperishable foods can be dropped off daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.—with Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen partnering to deliver items.  WHNT News 19
  • Food Bank of North Alabama is hosting a drive-thru pantry today at Joe Davis Stadium from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., serving about 300 families of furloughed federal workers with 30-pound boxes of pantry staples—rice, beans, pasta and chicken. The organization will also begin weekly mobile pantries during the government shutdown and keep its regular Friday pantry open near downtown Huntsville.  AL.com
  • The Caring Link President discussed the nonprofit’s mission and explained the voting process for the Humanitarian Award on Oct. 28. The remarks stressed the organization’s commitment to aid work—guiding local community involvement in the process.  WAFF 48

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Straight to Ale Brewing announced a new support measure for furloughed Huntsville workers—offering 50% off all Ale’s Kitchen food items Sunday through Thursday from 4 p.m. until close for those with a valid government ID as a response to the government shutdown.  WAFF 48

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alabama households made more money in 2024 with a median income of nearly $67,000—$2,700 more than in 2023—which brought the state closer to the national average. Shelby County’s income rose by about $11,600 to over $100,000 while Huntsville’s Madison County reached $89,000, and other counties showed mixed changes.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Calhoun Community College launched its first Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy program by opening a new state-of-the-art lab on its Huntsville campus last week. The accelerated five-semester program was developed with over 20 local healthcare employers to help meet the region’s high demand for respiratory care professionals.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Alabama Public Television is debating whether to cut ties with PBS, which would end shows like Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood—board members say funding cuts and political concerns are driving the move and a decision will be made at the meeting set for November 18.  AL.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologist Grace Anello delivered a Tuesday morning forecast that showed cloudy conditions with temperatures in the 50s as Hurricane Melissa affected Huntsville—she noted that a rain-maker was scheduled to arrive that evening.  WAAY 31

FINANCE NEWS

  • Families using Affordable Care Act coverage may face sharp premium increases in 2026 if Congress does not extend the subsidy rules that capped costs during the pandemic, according to financial advisor Jay McGowan. Families with incomes near the threshold risk losing help and could pay thousands more each year.  WAFF 48

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Huntsville City Council approved a zoning change for nearly 400 acres near I-65–565 for a planned development that may include up to 3,000 homes and retail, with developers set to mix housing types while addressing concerns over historical artifacts and native species. The city also is planning to spend $8–10 million on renovating Goldsmith-Schiffman Field to add flag football fields, a playground, and other amenities while replacing unsafe structures.  AL.com
  • Over 20,000 furloughed government workers in Huntsville face financial strain during a 28-day shutdown as many cut back on expenses and struggle with unemployment benefits. Some workers plan to search for new jobs while families even with upcoming birthdays now worry about paying health premiums—government officials have yet to vote on a funding measure.  WAFF 48

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Oct 27th, a Huntsville veteran who had been paralyzed regained movement using new technology—an advance that may offer more treatment options. Officials are evaluating the method to see if it will help other patients recover.  WAAY 31
