COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Huntsville Animal Services will host its fourth annual Howl-O-Ween Trunk ’r Treat tomorrow from 3 to 5 p.m. — the free event will offer decorated car trunks, fun games, and waived adoption fees for pets that are spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.  FOX 54
  • Huntsville’s Downtown Rescue Mission is offering turkey boxes filled with Thanksgiving fixings to families in need and is also accepting donations like turkeys, mashed potatoes, and stuffing—families can pick up a turkey box slip on November 3-4 between 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. and must return with a photo ID to receive their box, which will be distributed the week of Thanksgiving on November 24-25.  WHNT News 19
  • The 'STARS Dancing for HEALS' fundraiser will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Von Braun Center (in Huntsville) where local stars such as Joseph Ajdarodini and Karla Bunge will dance. The event will raise funds for HEALS Inc. (which provides free medical and dental care to children in Huntsville and Madison County).  WAAY 31
  • With the government shutdown continuing and SNAP funds delayed, several North Alabama groups helped families by providing food assistance; the Food Bank of North Alabama held a free distribution event last Wednesday at Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium (3125 Don Mincher Dr. SW) to serve nearly 100,000 SNAP recipients. House of the Harvest offered free breakfast and distribution on Saturday while Feeding Alabama provided a food finder tool for local aid.  WHNT News 19
  • The Food Bank of North Alabama stepped in today—handing out food boxes to hundreds of furloughed federal workers and their families to help meet their needs.  WAFF 48

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Straight to Ale in Huntsville is offering half-off meals to furloughed federal workers and their families from 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday as the government shutdown causes a drop in taproom sales—federal employees must show a valid government ID to receive the discount.  FOX 54

EDUCATION NEWS

  • April Thovson was named a FOX54 Top Teacher and has taught for 12 years — she began her first year at Cotaco School in Morgan County this year.  FOX 54
  • Madison City School leaders are rezoning schools to make room for a new Russell Branch Elementary opening in the 2026–2027 school year as many existing facilities have reached capacity. Several Oak Stone neighborhood parents raised concerns about splitting the community’s children and requested a sibling clause, and the board will consider these comments before final maps are approved by the school board and federal court.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city approved plans to transform the historic Goldsmith-Schiffman Field into a $10 million park — keeping part of its granite wall and adding flag football fields, pickleball courts and a raised pavilion. Construction will begin next year and take 15 months — with design input from community meetings.  AL.com
  • A Huntsville man said he is worried that the pause in nationwide SNAP benefits may leave him unable to feed his family—his anxiety grows as the deadline nears.  WAFF 48

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ambrose announced the sale of its 554,000-square-foot Class A distribution hub (located on more than 40 acres at 1250 Cooperage Way in Trinity) to Goldman Sachs (a global investment bank); the facility is fully leased to First Solar and is near its new manufacturing site, a move that will boost solar manufacturing in North Alabama and support plans for more than 700 new local jobs.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Developers proposed a 395-acre site for a new community—Westmoore Landing—that could eventually have up to 3,000 homes and a town center. The plan, which was approved by the Planning Commission and may take 35 years to complete, includes various housing types and public spaces while efforts will be made to preserve wildlife and address concerns about Native American artifacts.  AL.com

  • Columbia High School's football team hopes to break a 100-game losing streak in today's final game against Hazel Green — coach Sammie Coates, a former Auburn receiver, has rebuilt the team with a focus on discipline and academics.  WAFF 48
