COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and the City’s Green Team are hosting the annual Tree Planting Day event at Brahan Spring Park from 9 a.m. to noon, inviting volunteers of all ages to help grow the city’s tree canopy—volunteers will meet at 2800 Drake Avenue SW with designated parking signs provided.  WHNT News 19
  • Downtown Rescue Mission asked for help feeding local residents as officials feared a government shutdown might cut SNAP benefits — a change that could increase hunger in the area. The organization urged the community to support its efforts to prevent a rise in need.  WAAY 31
  • Mike Vojticek retired as the Assistant Director of the Von Braun Center on October 31 after more than 30 years of service that helped build our local entertainment and tourism scene. Mayor Tommy Battle honored his contributions by proclaiming October 29 as Mike Vojticek Day, and he plans to spend time traveling and with family (cheering on Alabama football) in retirement.  Huntsville Business Journal

  • Hilton will build two dual-brand hotels near Joe Davis Stadium with plans that include a 108-room LivSmart Studios by Hilton and a 114-room Tru Hotel by Hilton. The five-story hotels will offer meeting space and pet-friendly options—supporting events at the renovated stadium.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Ray of Hope event will highlight Huntsville's diverse culture when it takes place Sunday at the Orion. The event is set to showcase different traditions and artistic expressions from local groups.  WAAY 31
  • APR’s final episode of Yellowhammer Haunted Histories examined Huntsville’s Dead Children’s Playground in Maple Hill Cemetery where locals have reported eerie sounds and ghostly giggles — a legend tied to tragic local events that has inspired several paranormal books. The segment blends historical facts with local lore, highlighting a site once part of an 1818 cemetery and later linked to unsolved mysteries.  Alabama Public Radio

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Innovate Alabama awarded $2.2 million in SBIR and STTR supplemental grants to 13 companies, including eight from Huntsville, to boost research, product development, and job creation in sectors such as aerospace and defense—companies have used these funds to expand operations and secure additional federal contracts since 2022.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Gold reached a record high as a local store owner reported that more residents are selling their gold—driven by rising costs rather than market speculation. He said the increased living expenses are prompting people to trade in precious metals for cash.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Drake State created the Ellenae Fairhurst Endowed Scholarship to honor automotive leader Ellenae Hart-Fairhurst and her long career in the industry. The $500,000 gift will permanently support full- or part-time students, especially mothers (biological, adoptive, or legal guardians), to help them access affordable education in Huntsville.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • April Thovson, who has taught for twelve years, has been named a FOX54 Top Teacher and starts her first year at Cotaco School in Morgan County—she will bring her experience to help guide her students.  FOX 54
  • Bob Jones High School Marching Patriots is the only band from Alabama competing in the Band of America—Southeastern Regional Championship and they will showcase their skills on a national stage.  FOX 54

  • LifeSouth hosted the 'Save The Vampires' blood drive at WHNT News 19 — 200 Holmes Avenue NW — on October 31, with buses available from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for blood donations.  WHNT News 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • Buckhorn dominated Grissom and ended the regular season at a 7-3 record — the team will now face Hartselle in the first round of the playoffs.  WAAY 31
  • The NCAA cleared Jacksonville State to hire Rainsville native Jeremy Pruitt as an analyst despite his six-year show-cause order for recruiting violations. His suspension will not affect the 2026 season—though the order remains in place until July 2029.  WAAY 31
