COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Breathe Better Institute in Huntsville is launching its 'Breathe Better. Give Better.' Toy & Clothing Drive to collect new, unwrapped toys and clothing for families facing hardships due to the federal shutdown and financial uncertainty this holiday season—donations can be dropped off at 3810 Governors Dr SW Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until December 4.  WHNT News 19
  • Organizations in Huntsville held a resource fair at First Baptist Church—locally known as the Egg Beater Jesus Church—where about 300 furloughed federal workers received information on short-term job opportunities, mental health support and financial aid. Local agencies, schools and businesses provided roles such as seasonal Trash Pandas positions and part-time teaching as concerns grew amid the government shutdown.  AL.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Huntsville City Council approved the sale of a 42-acre site for a $240 million, 500,000 square-foot shopping center called North Village Town Center—set to include a Home Depot, a Target superstore, local merchants, and regional restaurants. Construction will begin at the end of next year with stores opening in 2027, and the city will profit by over $881,000 from the sale.  AL.com

  • Rock singer Rod Stewart and special guest Howard Jones will perform at the Orion Amphitheater on April 17 — tickets go on sale Friday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m.  FOX 54

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cities in the Tennessee Valley have adjusted trash collection schedules for Veterans Day. In Huntsville, municipal offices close Tuesday — trash pickup is shifted to Wednesday while Athens will run as scheduled and Decatur will operate one day behind normal timing.  FOX 54
  • The Huntsville Police Department warns drivers that downtown roads will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11 for the annual Veterans Day Parade—beginning at 8 a.m. and ending by 1 p.m.—which will travel from Monroe Street near the Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial through Big Spring Park and the Von Braun Center arena. Drivers are urged to plan alternate routes and exercise caution during this event.  City of Huntsville

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kitchen Cops inspectors reviewed restaurants in the Tennessee Valley this week—Jet Pep in DeKalb County had toxic chemical storage issues and unsafe food temperatures, Taqueria Santa Teresa in Albertville had flies and improper meat temperatures, and A&H Exxon in Morgan County scored low after a moldy cutting board and additional violations were found.  WAFF 48
  • Redstone Arsenal’s Fox Army Health Center—operating amid the ongoing shutdown—reduced services starting November 7 as it prioritized primary care for active-duty personnel and maintained a small acute care network. Non-urgent primary care and radiology were diverted to the Tricare network while pharmacy operations will run three days a week beginning November 13 so patients may face longer wait times.  WHNT News 19
  • WellStone will launch the state’s first Mobile Mental Health Clinic in the coming weeks to bring therapy sessions and psychiatric medication dispensing directly to thousands of Madison County children, teens, and adults facing barriers to care—customized by Vandoit and supported by a grant from Huntsville Hospital’s Community Health Initiative. The mobile unit will use Netsmart technology to keep client records secure and begin services through existing partners like First Stop and Downtown Rescue Mission.  Huntsville Business Journal

  • Huntsville Botanical Garden will launch its 30th season of Galaxy of Lights on November 14, an event running until December 31 that features traditional light displays and new attractions such as guided tram rides and sensory hours—presented by Damson Automotive, Publix, and Country Financial.
