  • Athens Police Department and Limestone County deputies collected gifts for nursing home residents this holiday season — the program ensures every resident gets a present under the Christmas tree. The effort brings festive cheer to the community.  WAFF 48
  • A backyard railway wonderland by Grant and Jenny Sweer opens a free Christmas display in Owens Cross Roads from 5-8 p.m. Friday, 4-8 p.m. Saturday and 4-7 p.m. Sunday at 4502 Clyde Circle — visitors can enjoy a festive model train layout, tiny decorated houses, and warming fire on site.  FOX 54

  • Lockheed Martin opened its $17 million 17,000-square-foot hypersonic facility on its Huntsville campus to bring together advanced test equipment and simulation tools for the Army, part of a larger local investment in defense.  AL.com

  • Huntsville Ballet Co. will perform The Nutcracker this season (venue and schedule details are pending) as part of its annual holiday showcase for local audiences.  WAFF 48
  • Huntsville Botanical Garden will switch Galaxy of Lights from Walking Nights to Driving Nights on December 7-16, letting guests enjoy classic holiday light displays from their vehicles. EDUCATION NEWS

  • School officials and students broke ground on Montview Elementary School and its new STEM Magnet School in the Montview area, marking the first step toward creating a modern facility (designed to boost learning) for local students.  FOX 54

  • Huntsville Hospital Foundation reported on Dec. 4 that donations reached 67% of the $86K needed for a machine that could double pediatric heart care. The new tool will soon enhance treatment for children in our community.  WAFF 48
