COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration is open for the Girls on the Run 2026 season for girls in grades 3-5 at Fern Bell and Dr. Richard Showers Sr. Recreation Centers, with sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. beginning March 2 through May 18 and registration ending Feb. 16.  City of Huntsville
  • On Dec. 13, Northrop Grumman’s VERITAS group and community partners joined Wreaths Across America to place about 1,000 wreaths at Valhalla Memory Gardens on Winchester Road, honoring local veterans and their legacy of service.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • The NOBLE gala in Huntsville raised funds for student scholarships as its proceeds went directly to support NOBLE’s programs - community donors boosted opportunities for local students.  WAAY 31
  • The Lincoln Bridgeforth Park committee hosted its annual Toy Giveaway on Saturday evening. Volunteers handed out dolls, action figures, bikes, and more to kids aged 0 to 13 at the park — an event that spread holiday cheer throughout the community.  FOX 54

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alabama System ended its test-optional admissions process for future undergraduates, so students applying for 2028-2029 must now submit ACT or SAT scores; the board approved the change Thursday and campuses, including the Huntsville campus (local), will soon share updated requirements.  1819 News
  • The Broadway Theatre League hosted a student workshop that featured Shucked actor Danielle Wade (who plays Maisy) to provide local youth with hands-on theatre experience.  FOX 54
  • UAH researchers analyzed nearly three months of high-energy XRISM data to study a 3.5 keV X-ray emission line in galaxy clusters, testing whether decaying sterile neutrinos could be dark matter. Further XRISM data will help improve these limits.  Huntsville Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Madison County has hired Huntsville-based consultant Spencer Batcheller to evaluate animal control services and plan improvements, including a potential new shelter and extra staffing. His report is expected by the end of 2026.  WAAY 31

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lifesouth Community Blood Centers in Huntsville is urging donors to visit the Chick-fil-A on University Drive tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to help Huntsville Hospital Health System by donating in-demand blood types plus receive three free meals, a t-shirt, and a gift card.  WAAY 31

  • RCP Companies plans a 12 acre Arts and Innovation Subdistrict + it will include an indoor music venue, two hotels and 60,000 sqft of retail across three blocks in MidCity District. More details will come in 2026.  WAFF 48
