  • Alabama State Parks will host First Day Hikes on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026 at Monte Sano, Cathedral Caverns and Lake Guntersville. Hikers will pay a $5 fee to reserve spots for the event.  FOX 54

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu cases doubled from 2.71% to 6.26% of ED visits last week, and Dr. Tim Howard urged residents to visit their primary care doctor rather than the emergency room when sick & get a flu shot to reduce symptoms. He said flu season was just beginning in the area.  WAFF 48

  • FanDuel announced its new prediction platform that lets users trade contracts on sports outcomes in Alabama despite the betting ban. The company explains the service is futures trading — not traditional gambling — and it may change how fans engage with games.  FOX 54
