  • Alabama State Parks are hosting First Day Hikes tomorrow at Monte Sano State Park — local hikers are invited to join guided walks that mark the start of the New Year.  FOX 54
  • Nearly 400 pairs of new shoes were given to local kids in Huntsville on Dec. 30 by a local law firm drive — a community effort to support children.  WAAY 31
  • Huntsville PD will run traffic safety checkpoints (in tribute to two young women killed by drunk drivers) today to remind residents to drive safely.  WAFF 48
  • Sophia Wilshusen, a 17-year-old who has faced rare neurological challenges, was surprised with a trip to Disney World during a recent Huntsville Havoc game. The moment celebrated her strength and the community's support.  FOX 54

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Sparkman High junior will perform at the Rose Parade in Pasadena + the event is set to air live on ABC at 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day.  WAAY 31

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey announced that Alabama has received $203M from the Rural Health Transformation Program to support rural hospitals in 58 counties. The five-year plan includes 11 initiatives focused on mental health, maternal health and emergency services — an advisory group will oversee the effort.  FOX 54
  • Noah Smothers, a 14-year-old from Sand Mountain, died early Monday from flu complications; he was the second child in the state to pass away this winter as officials warn that the flu season is growing. Community members at New Home Baptist Church in Pisgah remember him for his steadfast kindness.  AL.com

  • Alabama A&M beat Fisk 90-58 yesterday at the AAMU Event Center, with six players scoring double figures and Koron Davis nearly making a double-double with 14 points (missing one rebound and adding four assists). The Bulldogs will open SWAC play on Saturday at H.O. Clemmons Arena at 5:30 p.m.  FOX 54
  • Alabama players and coaches shared how Kalen DeBoer's second season turned the team around during Rose Bowl media day on Dec. 30, noting adjustments to boost confidence for upcoming games.  WAAY 31
